Popular piece from Fidler on the Roof by Jerry Bock The hit song from Fiddler on the Roof is set here in a minor mode, at a slow lilting waltz tempo. It should be played with careful observance of the dynamics with sensitivity to the 'weeping motif' in measures 19-20 and ebb and flow in measures 39-40, careful to bring out the emotion of the piece expressing a sense of nostalgic longing and the poignant observance of the passage of time. $7.00 - See more - Buy onlinePre-shipment lead time: 4 to 6 business days

SKU: GI.G-9199 Moving from Survival to Vision. Composed by John L. Benham. Music Education. 234 pages. GIA Publications #9199. Published by GIA Publications (GI.G-9199). ISBN 9781622772087. English. A summary of the practice of music advocacy, this book compiles research and thirty years’ experience of one of the nation’s most successful advocates for music education. It gives music educators, administrators, school board members, and community advocates step-by-step procedures for saving and building school music programs. John L. Benham has been in music education for over forty years and has worked as an advocacy consultant saving and building music programs for thirty years. His advocacy work and the methods presented in this book have saved $70 million in proposed music cuts, equivalent to approximately 2,000 teaching positions and 500,000 music students. Read what people have to say about Music Advocacy: Moving from Survival to Vision: Finally—a how to book for music education in our own districts! John L. Benham provides us with ‘the right stuff’ as well as rules to ensure that programs stay intact and keep complacency at bay. This must-have resource helps us understand educational processes and how budget decisions are made. It also provides suggestions on how to involve all constituents in the process of advocacy by guaranteeing that the best interest of the students remains the basis for all decision making. Music programs can be saved even when cuts appear to be imminent, and Music Advocacy: Moving from Survival to Vision provides effective, proactive strategies not only to avoid these cuts but also to establish a long-term plan for continued development. —Marcia M. Neel, president, Music Education Consultants, Inc. John Benham is a rare individual who walks his talk with a sense of mission unknown in common hours, and every person connected with arts education is the beneficiary of his immeasurable commitment and dedication. Once again he has come to the forefront of the profession by sharing his profound knowledge and wisdom. Simply put, this book represents a tried-and-true blueprint of success. It is a priceless gift to the future of our educational landscape and a reflective tribute to the visionary contribution of an author of purpose. —Tim Lautzenheiser, Attitude Concepts for Today, Inc. Benham’s new book is a must-have for every music department at both the K–12 and collegiate levels. His theory of reverse economics along with his guidance have saved music education experiences for thousands of students as well as many careers. This book provides information on scheduling issues as well as a clear explanation of his reverse economics theory. It gives a step-by-step outline on how to handle threats to music programs. The book is a wealth of information and is highly recommended. —Mary Wagner, chair, Fairfax Arts Coalition for Education, and National ASTA past president As a music retailer who has worked closely with John L. Benham for over ten years, I appreciate his discovery of reverse economics. It is brilliantly simple and proves the financial efficacy of a healthy music department! Every instrument retailer needs to share this vital resource with all of their school customers. This is the manual that every music department needs to fully support their program. The information needs to be shared with your school board every year. —Doug Schmitt, vice president of music education, Schmitt Music Stores. $23.95 - See more - Buy onlinePre-shipment lead time: 1 to 2 weeks

| Viola Recital Album, Volume 2 - Easy Barenreiter
Viola, piano (2 violas) (Viola, Piano (Violas (2))) - Level 2 SKU: BA.BA08991...(+)
Viola, piano (2 violas) (Viola, Piano (Violas (2))) - Level 2 SKU: BA.BA08991 9 Recital Pieces in First Position for Viola an Piano or Two Violas. Edited by Christoph Sassmannshaus, Kurt Sassmannshaus, and Melissa Lusk. Stapled. Barenreiter's Sassmannshaus. Performance score, Part. 12/14/9 pages. Baerenreiter Verlag #BA08991_00. Published by Baerenreiter Verlag (BA.BA08991). ISBN 9790006565665. 30 x 23 cm inches. The nine pieces in this second volume of the “Viola Recital Album” augment those appearing in volume 2 of the viola tutor. There the pieces are integrated in ascending order of difficulty, whereas the additional pieces in the “Recital Album” can be handled more freely and inserted at any point for the sake of variety.
The volume contains such pieces as Carrie Williams Krogmann's “Rotkehlchens Nachtgesang” (“Robin's nocturne”) or Wilhelm Fitzenhagen's “Russisches Lied ohne Worte” (“Russian song without words”).
Each piece is accompanied by duo version in which the teacher or an advanced learner can play the second part. There is also a piano part that can be played by the teacher or parents.
All the pieces in the four “Viola Recital Albums” represent welcome additions to the already varied repertoire of Egon Sassmannhaus's viola tutor “Early Start on the Viola”.
Kurt Sassmannshaus is the editor of many string editions in the Bärenreiter catalogue. He continues in the tradition of “Early Start on String Instruments” founded by his father, Egon Sassmannshaus. The new editions mentioned here were developed by Kurt Sassmannshaus in conjunction with his wife Melissa Lusk and his son Christoph Sassmannshaus.
About Baerenreiter's Sassmannshaus Children playfully learn reliable technique at the earliest age. For more than three decades the Sassmannshaus Tradition has been the household name for excellence in beginner methods in German-speaking countries. More than half a million students have successfully learned to play using this publication.
This tried and tested German method is now available in English! The best-selling method that gave generations of European musicians their foundation is now available in English, with content and songs newly adapted for today's English speaking children.
What makes this method so special? - The child-friendly and age-appropriate text underlying the music enables children to perceive melodies as a whole and to understand their singable qualities.
- Songs and scales in different positions are easily explained and mastered within the first year. This is an important advantage over methods that confine children to the first position for many years.
- Note reading is emphasized from the first lesson - children are brought up to become proficient sight-readers and play in chamber music ensembles as early as possible.
- In contrast to other beginner methods, The Sassmannshaus Tradition progresses swiftly by introducing advanced techniques in rudimentary form, such as shifting and varied bow strokes.
- Ensemble playing is encouraged from the very beginning.
- The method is suitable for single instruction as well as for group and class lessons.
- The large print notes and text as well as many colorful illustrations are particularly child-friendly and very attractive to pre-school children and school children alike.
- The substantial volumes contain comprehensive material and carefully calibrated learning curves. They keep children curious and interested for many months and years.

| Sonatina String Orchestra Carl Fischer

Orchestra String Orchestra - Grade 2-2.5 SKU: CF.YAS13F Composed by Muzio Clementi. Arranged by Douglas Townsend. Carl Fischer Young String Orchestra Series. Classical. Full score. With Standard notation. 12 pages. Carl Fischer Music #YAS13F. Published by Carl Fischer Music (CF.YAS13F). ISBN 9780825848339. UPC: 798408048334. 8.5 X 11 inches. Key: G major. IApart from some of his Sonatinas, Opus 36, Clementi's life and music are hardly known to the piano teachers and students of today. For example, in addition to the above mentioned Sonatinas, Clementi wrote sixty sonatas for the piano, many of them unjustly neglected, although his friend Beethoven regarded some of them very highly. Clementi also wrote symphonies (some of which he arranged as piano sonatas), a substantial number of waltzes and other dances for the piano as well as sonatas and sonatinas for piano four-hands.In addition to composing, Clementi was a much sought after piano teacher, and included among his students John Field (Father of the 'Nocturne'), and Meyerbeer. In his later years, Clementi became a very successful music publisher, publishing among other works the first English edition of Beethoven's Violin Concerto, in the great composer's own arrangement for the piano, as well as some of his string quartets. Clementi was also one of the first English piano manufacturers to make pianos with a metal frame and string them with wire. The Sonatina in C, Opus 36, No. 1 was one of six such works Clementi wrote in 1797. He must have been partial to these little pieces (for which he also provided the fingerings), since they were reissued (without the fingering) by the composer shortly after 1801. About 1820, he issued ''the sixth edition, with considerable improvements by the author;· with fingerings added and several minor changes, among which were that many of them were written an octave higher.IIIt has often been said, generally by those unhampered by the facts, that composers of the past (and, dare we add, the present?), usually handled their financial affairs with their public and publishers with a poor sense of business acumen or common sense. As a result they frequently found themselves in financial straits.Contrary to popular opinion, this was the exception rather than the rule. With the exception of Mozart and perhaps a few other composers, the majority of composers then, as now, were quite successful in their dealings with the public and their publishers, as the following examples will show.It was not unusual for 18th- and 19th-century composers to arrange some of their more popular compositions for different combinations of instruments in order to increase their availability to a larger music-playing public. Telemann, in the introduction to his seventy-two cantatas for solo voice and one melody instrument (flute, oboe or violin, with the usual continua) Der Harmonische Gottesdienst, tor example, suggests that if a singer is not available to perform a cantata the voice part could be played by another instrument. And in the introduction to his Six Concertos and Six Suites for flute, violin and continua, he named four different instrumental combinations that could perform these pieces, and actually wrote out the notes for the different possibilities. Bach arranged his violin concertos for keyboard, and Beethoven not only arranged his Piano Sonata in E Major, Opus 14, No. 1 for string quartet, he also transposed it to the key of F. Brahm's well-known Quintet in F Minor for piano and strings was his own arrangement of his earlier sonata for two pianos, also in F Minor.IIIWe come now to Clementi. It is well known that some of his sixty piano sonatas were his own arrangements of some of his lost symphonies, and that some of his rondos for piano four-hands were originally the last movements of his solo sonatas or piano trios. In order to make the first movement of his delightful Sonatina in C, Opus 36, No. 1 accessible to young string players, I have followed the example established by the composer himself by arranging and transposing one of his piano compositions from one medium (the piano) to another. (string instruments). In order to simplify the work for young string players, in the process of adapting it to the new medium it was necessary to transpose it from the original key of C to G, thereby doing away with some of the difficulties they would have encountered in the original key. The first violin and cello parts are similar to the right- and left-hand parts of the original piano version. The few changes I have made in these parts have been for the convenience of the string players, but in no way do they change the nature of the music.Since the original implied a harmonic framework in many places, I have added a second violin and viola part in such a way that they not only have interesting music to play, but also fill in some of the implied harmony without in any way detracting from the composition's musical value. Occasionally, it has been necessary to raise or lower a few passages an octave or to modify others slightly to make them more accessible for young players. It is hoped that the musical value of the composition has not been too compromised, and that students and teachers will come to enjoy this little piece in its new setting as much as pianists have in the original one. This arrangement may also be performed by a solo string quartet. When performed by a string orchestra, the double bass part may be omitted.- Douglas TownsendString editing by Amy Rosen. About Carl Fischer Young String Orchestra Series This series of Grade 2/Grade 2.5 pieces is designed for second and third year ensembles. This book has provided a clear and well-organized pedagogy that is helping my students to improve in all facets of being a choral musician. — Alan Davis, Director of Choirs, Hemet High School, Hemet, CA Habits of a Successful Choral Musician by Eric Wilkinson and Scott Rush is a fantastic resource for choir directors who seek to develop all levels of singers. The book provides a pedagogical approach to teaching voice building, rhythm work, tuning exercises, sight-reading, theory exercises, and suggestions to nurture the entire musician. Perfect for use by an entire choir or soloist, this book contains carefully sequenced warm-ups, vocalises, chorales, rhythm work, tonal patterns, sight-singing etudes, and much more. In one place, this book presents everything an aspiring singer needs to build fundamental musicianship skills and then be able to transfer those skills directly into the performance of great literature. Habits of a Successful Choral Musician: Provides material for use during fundamentals time that promotes a comprehensive approach to developing skills necessary to fill the musical toolbox.
